Why is it called Happy Hour
The origin of Happy Hour can be traced back to the United States Navy. Navy officer, Lieutenant Jonas Ingram, originated the practice of “Happy Hour” aboard his ship, the USS Arkansas. Since the Arkansas was the flagship of Admiral Charles Badger, the commander of the Atlantic Fleet, officers encouraged its spread to the other ships of the fleet and into the ships of the wider U.S. Navy. Over the years, the term became more about drinking than entertaining and it is now widely used as a term to describe afternoon drinks at a bar, often at a discounted price offered by the establishment
Prohibition created “The Cocktail Hour”
The concept of the happy hour came into its own around the time of Prohibition. After the ban on alcohol across the United Statespeople would begin hosting secret “cocktail hours” at either the local speakeasy or at a friend’s home. Friends would have a few drinks and then take a trip to the restaurant where alcohol could not be served.
When the Prohibition came to an end in 1933, “Happy Hour” had caught on and became a marketing institution for restaurants and bars with discounted food and beverages served during Happy Hour.
